Issue 105: Big day in Lincoln Park
Fun things happening today, plus also the city wants to tear down one of our coolest buildings because of course they do.
Hello! A very short newsletter today since we’ve been out of town much of the week. Hope to see you at some of the events in Lincoln Park and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend! — Amy
Big day in Lincoln Park
Our normally pretty sleepy park has two events happening today. For starters, the West Side’s St. Aloysius Church is celebrating their 125th year with a really cute carnival.
Not pictured (because it was a bit sprawling): games you play for prizes, a rock climbing wall, a trampoline game, a bounce house, an event stage with music, a few rides, and a bar serving wine. The last day of the carnival is today (Sunday, June 18) from 2pm to 8pm, and it’s in Lincoln Park right behind where the church is (and extends to the Firefighter’s Memorial area).
Event number two is the first day of the annual Farmer’s Market, sponsored by the West Side Community Alliance. Featuring organic produce from Circle Brook Farm, cookies and sweets from the Cookie Megster, and food truck Savage Burger, this market has been a real godsend to the neighborhood. The produce at Circle Brook is really good and it’s fairly priced — honestly, some of their prices are lower than our local grocery store, and it’s much better quality. And the market will be in the park, near the Belmont entrance, every Sunday 10am-2pm.
Today they’ll be hosting a nature journaling for kids workshop, sponsored by the JC Parks Coalition from 10:30am-1:30pm. And there will be free yoga — ok, it’s too late by the time this newsletter gets to you, but there will be free yoga every week, weather permitting — at 9:30am.
Next week, there’s even more stuff going on:
Church World Services, an organization that helps refugees resettle in the US, will be celebrating World Refugee Day with an event featuring food, performances, art, and other fun stuff. There’s not too much info available but I did find this on their site:
Some of those activities already planned include performances by Ukrainian and Afghan dancers, face painting, visits from local politicians and more!
Ok, don’t let the visits from local politicians turn you off of the event! I’m sure it will be a fun time and maybe there will even be Ukrainian food at it?? My fingers are crossed. For more info, check out their site.

The Golden Door Film Festival is on its way, June 22-24;
Former owner of the Hard Grove arrested for protesting Trump in Miami;
The JC Mutual Aid Society is having a picnic this Thursday at 7pm in Canco Park. Open to all! We’re very nice and while we will tell you about volunteer opportunities, you can also come to just hang out with us. Please bring some snacks to share;
The city has plans to demolish one of the coolest buildings in JC, 50 Journal Square. The building is the site of the former Tube Bar, and is just a really interesting and unique architectural detail in JSQ. That they’re going to tear it down is depressing and bleak and just really exhausting and I’m really sick of this complete disrespect to our own history. To quote Councilman Boggiano from that article: “Everything’s closed in this whole city, there’s nothing left.” Here’s an editorial from the JC Times as well.
